Torfaen Young People's Forum was set up to make

sure young people’s voices are heard in Torfaen. Young people have a right to say what they think should happen, when adults are making decisions that affect them and to have their opinions taken into account (UNCRC article 12)

So what is Torfaen Young People’s Forum?

  • It is an opportunity for all young people aged 11-25 living in Torfaen to have a say in issues that affect their lives
  • It is a chance to meet other young people living in Torfaen and to find out their views
  • It is a system in which young people can influence the people who make decisions
  • It is a chance for young people to plan and take action on issues that are important to them

How does it work?

The Forum meets evey month at different places throughout Torfaen. Any young person is welcome to attend. The meetings are an opportunity for young people to get together, discuss and get involved in issue that affect them. They also have the opportunity to go away for residential weekends and take part in lots of activities (take a look at some of the photos) as well as planning how to help tackle really important issues like bullying.

What have the Forum done so far?

  • Made a presentation to local councillors about bullying issues and suggested solutions. Helped to create the Anti- Bullying Co-ordinators post. Helped to develop an Anti-Bullying Strategy and taken part in the launch event.
  • Represented young people's views to the people who make decisions about things that happen in Torfaen.
  • Trained the workers to run the Play Scheme over the summer
  • Created a logo and marketing campaign for the Forum
  • Set up sub groups to work on 2 issues that young people in Torfaen are concerned about Anti Bullying and Transport
  • Forum representatives attended Funky Dragon AGM in Cardiff
  • Have been involved in the job interviews for a number of important roles within Torfaen County Council
  • Attended a weekend residential team building event in September

These are just a few of the important things that the young people of the Forum have done. However Its not just the issues that are important its also an opportunity to make lots of new friends, have a laugh and  try somthing new.
