Torfaen Youth Forum

Issues

Issues

The Forum is looking at the some issues that concern young people living in Torfaen

Young people from the Forum have set up sub goups to work on these issues.

Street Lighting

The Forum have been concerned about the switching off of street lights throughout Torfaen. They raised the issue of how young people had been consulted about this and the also the worry for them when out and about in the evenings. They were also concerned about how this might increase crime and the effect on elderly people in the community. They have decided to find out how other young people feel about this issue through their schools and youth groups and then plan what further steps they can take to raise their concerns with Torfaen Council.

Anti Bullying

Torfaen now has an Anti-Bullying Strategy. Member of the Forum took part in the launch event which was attended by Keith Towler Children's Commissioner for Wales and Jane Hutt AM. Forum representatives made a presentation about the work they had done to help get the strategy developed.  The Anti Bullying sub group is currrently working on an idea for an anti-bullying website in Torfaen.

The anti  bullying sub group met on the 27th August and worked with Sam Waldron (Anti bullying Co-ordinator ) to research design ideas for  the new website. The group also looked at the stucture of the website and came up with ideas for the content. The group are also helping with the design and content of a leaflet

Transport

A sub group has been put together to look at transport issues and some meetings have been arranged. It was also an issue that came through at the Funky Dragon AGM. The key concern is affordability for young people. The transport sub group is planning to send a letter to the bus company to find out more information.

Leisure Facilities

The Forum has raised concerns about access to leisure facilities in Torfaen young people are being encouraged to exercise but the cost can discourage many young people from being able to take part and go to leisure facilities. The group has contacted the head of Leisure and Community Services to ask question and as a result young people representatives from the Forum have been invited to attend one of their management meetings to talk about their concerns.

Torfaen Youth Forum provides young people with the opportunity to get their view heard.
