Forgeside RFC
Forge Side Rugby Club was formed around 1880 out of a community that served the Iron and Coal industries in and around Blaenavon. Forge Side is situated to the west of Blaenavon very near to Big Pit, and it was very vibrant and sporting community even in those days. Reporting of rugby was not a prioriy in those days and the first reported game occurred in 1885/86 in which Blaenavon Forgeside Star Juniors beat Blaina Wanderers by 1 try and 5 touchdowns to one disputed try. Forge Side RFC continued to play until 1912 when reports stopped. They reformed again in 1927 and played until 1933 when the club was again disbanded. After the Second World War had ended soldiers back from the war and residents decided to reform the club, but with no resources and only their own resolve to establish rugby once again at Forgeside. They achieved their aims with great success and eventually Forge Side became a club to be feared in Junior Rugby Football.
By establishing a sound base in 1947 through their own endeavours, Forge Side has flourished until the present day, producing and developing along the way, many players who have gone on to higher levels with hounors.
With the new playing structure being introduced in Welsh Rugby, it is important that Forge Side and clubs like them continue to be at the forefront in developing players for the future of the good health of the game in the Principality.
