Brynmawr 8 Croesyceiliog 26
22 April 2006
Croesy took a huge step towards safety in Division Two East with a hard fought 26-8 win against the league's basement side Brynmawr. Despite their lowly position the home side were determined to make it difficult for the Cockerels as they searched in vain for their first win in two seasons.
Playing up the slope in the first half Croesy scored with their first meaningful attack. Centre Stuart Fitzgerald broke through in midfield and fed full-back Darryl Carter, playing on permit, who strolled over for a try with his first touch of the ball in Croesy colours. Carter also chipped in with 3 penalties and a conversion for 16 points on his debut.
Croesy didn't have things their own way in the first half and conceded a try and penalty before reasserting themselves after the break. The Croesy wings David Davies and John Misljen always looked dangerous with ball in hand and both scored tries but unfortunately they didn't see enough of the ball.
In reality this was not Croesy's best performance of the season but it was good enough to secure the three points that virtually secure their place in the league for another year. Once again youth team players were given their chance to stake a claim for regular first team rugby next season. Prop Darryl Thomas gave another assured performance, replacement second row Tom Price also showed considerable skill and commitment and scrum-half Ieuan Wakefield showed his versatility by coming on on the wing.
Croesy finish the season with two home games, against Rhydyfelin on Wednesday and Llantwit Fardre on Saturday. Although it is unlikely, it is still mathematically possible to be caught by both Rumney and Brynithel and so Croesy will be going all out to win both games.
By way of a thank you to the club's sponsors and supporters they are invited to an aftermatch buffet on Saturday.
