Croesyceiliog 5 Cwmbran 9
Croesy entertained near neighbours Cwmbran hoping to keep the pressure on Garndiffaith for 3rd position in the league. However in one of the most disappointing performances in a long ime Croesy deservedly lost, and were perhaps lucky not to lose by more points.
From the kick off Cwmbran kept Croesy under pressure, and but for poor handling could have had two early tries, before an offence at the ruck on the Croesy 22 allowed Cwmbran to take the lead with a penalty goal after 10 minutes. This did wake Croesy up and a couple of promising midfield breaks by David Davies promised better things to come. After 17 minutes Croesy took a lineout in the Cwmbran 22 and the well maintained forward drive resulted in a try for Gavin Howells, his 11th of the season. The try was unconverted.
With Croesy starting to put things together, even against the wind, it appeared as if things would improve. However it was Cwmbran who regained the lead on the half hour with a 30 metre drop goal from their outside half. This was the last score of the first-half which ended with Cwmbran leading 6-5.
With the wind in the second half Croesy would have expected to take some control, but it never happened, with Croesy failing to use the conditions and being second best at the ruck and maul. In fact Cwmbran could have had another try except for more bad handling, before a penalty for offside against Croesy in their own 22 was successfully converted by the Cwmbran outside half. This was the last score of a very disappointing game.
It must be said to the critics, the team did not set out to play badly. There have been many promising performances this year and the team and coaches deserve support.
Next Saturday Croesy entertain Senghenydd and everybody will be looking for a big improvement
