Cwmbran 9 Croesyceiliog 10
Croesy overcame stubborn resistance from local rivals Cwmbran to come from behind and grab a 10-9 win at the Kings Head Ground. The game doubled up as a rearranged league game and the annual Jack Walker Cup match. The win means Croesy consolidate their 4th position in the league as well as retaining the Cup for the 4th year.
But Croesy didn't have things all their own way and almost paid the price for their inability to turn pressure into points. Playing down the slope in the first half Croesy put immense pressure on the Cwmbran line but the home defence held firm. Croesy also had 3 possible penalty chances but decided to go for the touchline each time and poor execution meant they let Cwmbran off the hook meaning that the half ended 0-0.
In contrast Cwmbran took their chances in the second half and with less than 10 minutes to go found themselves 9-3 up with Croesy's only points from an Entwistle penalty. But Croesy piled on the pressure helped by a Cwmbran yellow card and eventually flanker Gavin Howells forced his way over wide out for the only tryof the match. It still needed Entwistle to convert a tricky conversion which he did to take Croesy in front for the first time and set up a tense final few minutes.
The win will do wonders for Croesy's confidence after 3 successive defeats and they head to Pontllanfraith on Saturday looking to pick up their first double of the season.
