Cockerels Comments 24 August 2005

We are pleased to be able to report that we have now completed our coaching team with the appointment of Forwards Coach Andy Peacock. Andy is a very experienced former player including spells at Newport and Pontypool. He is also a highly rated WRU Level 3 coach. After his first scrummaging session recently it was soon clear he is going to have to a real impact on our young pack and even the old heads like Hank (Anthony Gardner) and Baloo (Anthony Axford) learnt a thing or 2.

We have completed our 2 warm-up games, finishing with a 17-5 win against Hartridge after the 31-7 defeat at Pontypool United. We shouldn't read too much into results at this stage of the season. It was just important that all the squad had a run out and that the new coaches Chris and Andy could have a first opportunity to see the players in action.

Encouraging news for the club is the signing of 2 backrow forwards - No.8 Paul Hicks formerly of Talywain who showed up really well in both warm-up games and blindside Jacob (Jake) Nash who was on a dual contract with Pontypool and Pontypool United last season. This will strengthen that area of the team particularly now that Chris (Larry) Williams has confirmed that he is no longer considering a move to Pontypool.

Congratulations to Larry and David (Divvy) Davies who have both been selected to play for Wales A at Rugby League on Friday.

Training next week will take place on Tuesday instead of Monday because of the bank holiday.

Our next game is away to Division 4 West side Crymych in the first round of the Konika Minolta Welsh Cup on Saturday 3rd September. The bus is due to leave at 10.30. More details to follow next week.
