History
Gwent Dragons is a multi sports club for people with disabilities. It was formed in 1986 when a group of people from a local Phab group wanted a sports club specifically for them. The club was formed and has always been run by the members. These members have been supported by a number of volunteers over the years who have helped with the organisation of the club and those interested have gone on to become coaches in the club, gaining recognised coaching qualifications.
The club has always met on sunday mornings, and apart from when it was closed, at Cwmbran Stadium where it has always had the suppoort from the staff.
The club participate in various sports and these have changed as the demand from the members but the general sports offered are Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boccia, Bowls,
Football, General fitness, New Age Kurling, Swimming, Table Tennis and Weight Lifting.
Through out it existance the club has maintained its affiliation to PhAB and for many years took part in PhAB Wales Festival of Sport winning various awards along the way.
The club has participated in many Disability games at places like Delyn and Deeside Camborne, Newton Abbot, Shepton Mallett and Aylsbury but the ever increasing costs for transport and accommodation and the load on the volunteers time much of this has been restricted in recent years but it is hoped that it may be possible to start taking part in some games soon.
In 2002 the club went on its first holiday with 18 members and family going to Florida and spending 2 weeks with Mickey Mouse. This was repeated in 2004 with 23 people on the trip and another trip is planned for 2006. This now looks like becoming a two yearly event while there are volunteers prepared to organise the trip.
Over the years the club have had members who have excelled in their sport and have moved on from the club to have more intensive coaching which has resulted in them achieving such things as Paralympic Gold Medal in Swimming. Wrld Championship Gold for Club Throwing. British junior long jump champion and some of the current members are being targetted for London 2012
In recent years the officers in the club became aware of the burden on carers of young children and the conflict that can occur when there are more than one child in the family but not all with disabilities and it became a club policy that in these cases siblings are welcome to join the club and participate in the sports offered and receive the same coaching as every one else.
