Pontyfelin Ladies Bowls

History

Pontyfelin Ladies Bowls Club started out as Pontypool Ladies Bowls Club in 1951.   The first meeting was held at the "unicorn"on October 17th 1951. The membership fee was to be two shilling and sixpence.  Ladies present at this meeting were.  Mrs. A Davies, Mrs.C Barker, Mrs. E. Harris, Mrs. T.Blewitt, Mrs. C. Peadon, Mrs. H. Organ, Mrs. Leek, Mrs. R. Whatley.   Officers elected:- Secretary Mrs. C. Barker,   Treasurer; Mrs. T. Blewitt.   It is resolved to be affiliated to The Sourth Wales and Monmouthshire Bowling Association.

 

Committee meeting held at The "Unicorn" on Monday 29th October 1951.  Mrs. A. C. Jones of Cwmbran Ladies Bowling Club in the chair.   Mrs. Agnes Davies was proposed as President and Mrs. C. Peadon was proposed as chairwoman.   A general committee and selection committee was elected.   The Secretary acknowledged a letter from the S.W.and Mon LB A of £1.1.0 entrance fee.

 

TRANSPORT.  It was decided to travel by ordinary bus service.  Mountain Ash and Merthyr games were more suitable for train, Porthcawl match left to Secretary to make necessary arrangemnets.

The wearing apparel for all official matches it was decided that white dresses to be  worn.

 

General meeting held at the "unicorn" on Tuesday February 19th 1952.   Mrs T. Blewitt in the chair. Mrs. Inseel secretary of the South Wales and Monmouthshire Bowling Association was present and addressed the meeting.

 

Committee meeting held at the "unicorn" on  Tuesday April 22 1952.  It was agreed that the practice match for May 6th to commence at 3pm prompt and to be played as Captains team versus Vice Captains Team.  When the match is completed each rink to play for pennies and the player of the rink that wins, to give it towards our funds.  Proposed for the practice match that the club  find the tea, sugar and milk and to charge,one shilling a two pence, for the tea and fourpence for the  green, total  one shilling and six pence. doing this would help  our funds which is very necessary.   It was also decided to charge 1/3p  each for fixture cards.

 

The entering of the South Wales and Mon ass. Singles and Pairs, Rink and Triples competitions it was thought that great experiance  would be gained and it was agreed that we enter.

 

Mrs C. Peadon (chairwoman)was chosen to represent Monmouthshire ladies to play against Lincolnshire touring side at Abergavenny in the first year of forming Pontypool Ladies Bowls Club.

 

   

       In 1991 the ladies decided to move to Panteg Park Bowling green, because they had to walk from the car park to the bowling green carrying their bowls bags,  then play a game of bowls,  they found this too much .    Mrs Joan Pipe was the Secretary and Treasurer at that time.   The team was growing in strength and they won the  South Wales and Mon County afternoon League three years running, also four of the  Ladies won the Welsh rink and went on the win the British Isles Rink in Belfast in 1993.    In 1999 Mrs Joan Pipe retired as Secretary and Treasurer, and Mrs Pam Skinner took the position as Secretary and Mrs Maureen Garrett was Treasurer.     

    

Because of the state of the Bowling Green and Pavilion at Panteg Park, the Ladies were invited

to join the men at Pontyfelin Bowls Club in 2000. We are now a mixed club. Treasurer Mrs. Margaret Day,  Secretary Mrs. Myra Williams,  telephone number 01633 867262
