Wales v Australia

Wales will look to record back-to-back wins over Australia for the first time in 31 years in Cardiff on Saturday.

A 24-22 victory in Cardiff last year ended a nine-match losing streak and hopes are high of a repeat success.

Wales coach Gareth Jenkins has been able to name a near full-strength side for his first Test on home soil, as Stephen Jones takes over as captain.

Australia, also with a new skipper in Phil Waugh, have sprung a surprise by naming an experimental back division.

Stephen Larkham, who has played all his international rugby either at fly-half or full-back, will partner Lote Tuqiri in a new-look midfield.

Mat Rogers is at fly-half with Matt Giteau, usually an inside centre, starting at scrum-half.

"This tour is about looking at other options," said Australia coach John Connolly, who saw his midweek side fall to shock loss to an under-strength Ospreys match on Wednesday.

"We are not selling any Tests short but there are a number of things we would like to understand by the end of the tour.

"One of them is Matt Giteau at half-back, another one is Rogers as a 10. Is Stephen Larkham a 12?"

Wales have no such uncertainty behind the scrum as the three-quarters who thrilled during the 2005 Grand Slam are available again.

Tom Shanklin and Gavin Henson, the midfield choice as Wales swept all before them, are reunited after injury and suspension kept them apart until now.

Gareth Thomas is back for the first time in nine months after suffering a mini-stroke to line up on the wing, allowing Kevin Morgan to take the number 15 jersey.

"We are strong," said Jenkins, looking for his first win as Wales coach following two summer defeats in Argentina.

"We have got British Lion half-backs in Stephen Jones and Dwayne Peel.

"Gavin was a British Lion last year and Tom is coming back from injury and has looked good for the Cardiff Blues.

"We have got Gareth Thomas and Shane Williams outside them and both are British Lions."

The foundations for last November's narrow victory was laid by a dominant performance by the Wales pack, epitomised by the sight of the Australia scrum being driven over their own tryline and conceding a penalty try.

Flanker Waugh, leading the side in the absence of the injured Stirling Mortlock, and lock Nathan Sharpe are the only survivors from the Wallaby pack.

The tourists have focused more on their scrum following the appointment of forward-orientated coaches John Connolly and Michael Foley.

But when asked if he had seen any signs of improvement over the last 12 months, Jenkins replied: "No, not really."
