AROUND 1,000 people braved a storm to line the streets of Pontypool on Saturday as the annual Christmas cavalcade launched the festive season in the town.
Revellers enjoyed street entertainment, culminating in the arrival of the cavalcade and the switch-on of the Christmas lights.
The annual parade, which, saw local people dressing up as everything from a Victorian lady to an elf started at 4.30pm from the Pontypool community council offices.
Santa headed the procession before meeting excited youngsters.
From 11am, there was entertainment and music in the town.
The cavalcade reached a climax when BBC Wales presenter Roy Noble switched on the Christmas lights, followed by a huge firework display.
Torfaen mayor Mary Barnett said despite the weather the event was a success.
"It was absolutely wonderful," she said
