OLDER people are being reminded to Keep Well This Winter as part of an annual campaign
More than 7,000 people aged 65 and over have died from cold-related illnesses over the past five winters in Wales.
Here are some key points to remember from Keep Well This Winter, which is promoted by Newport Local Health Board, the National Public Health Service, Age Concern Cymru and a number of other agencies:
* Safety with medicines - check with your pharmacist about the correct ways to take and store medicine
*Flu jabs - everyone over 65 and those in high risk groups (people with asthma, heart disease and diabetes, for example) are eligible for a free jab.
Contact your GP for further information
* Fire safety - install and maintain smoke alarms in every storey of the home John Griffiths, AM for Newport East, is backing the campaign.
He said: "Far too many people die in Wales every winter because they didn't take the most sensible steps in terms of safeguarding their health and well-being.
"There's a lot of advice and schemes available, such as flu jabs and help with home insulation, but obviously people have to take advantage of these things."
