Land of My Fathers

sailor a poem for dad

my dad

                                                                     DAD WAS A SAILOR

By Dennis T Baker

(son)

We set is heart upon the sea

because it’s the place

He wanted to be.

We took him there and said goodbye

each knee deep in water

with a tear in our eye.

Goodbye dad we each said in turn

has mam passed around

His red clay urn.

Then one by one we walked up the beach

each deep in thought

minds out of reach

We had granted dads most dear wish

his heart was now among the fish

Have a safe journey dear old dad

We’ll try or best to be happy

                                                                           and not to be sad.
