National Poetry Day 2004

Healthy Eating by Grenville Thomas

My burgers and chips and bangers and mash

Plus a pint of beer and stout

Are things I’ve learned to live without.

Not without a pang or two

And this I must truly say

My appetite’s not gone away.

Withdrawal symptoms are with me still

But I’m feeling much more fit

And my trousers waistband shows it.

These really are my salad days

My days of lime and roses.

That healthy eating so imposes.

So strut my stuff

And think not of pain

I can see my feet again.
