Map Explorer 187 Llawwertyd Wells and Llyn Brianne
This is a great walk not too demanding but a good accent up to 1200 feet from Troed-rhiw cymmer and a further 300 feet from Bryn-amber. But it is well worth it for the scenery in a truly wild countryside.
From Brecon go to Llandovery. Look for the sign to Llyn Brianne (11 miles). The road will be on your right. Follow this country road without deviating to the right or left for about 7 miles where the river divides into two. The road follows the right fork of the river. Look for a road to the left (771459) taking you down to a bridge. Cross the bridge, turn right and follow this lane until you arrive at another bridge where there is limited parking.
This is the start of your walk and you are in Red Kite and Buzzard country.
Cross this bridge and follow the road passing a farm (Troed-rhiw cymmer - 763485) on your left. The made-up route way ascends north and then north-west past a Standing Stone (755406). As you descend into a valley look for a path on your right before you reach the valley bottom (744509). Ascend this path. Where it should enter the Forestry the stile has been removed and replaced with wire which has been pushed down by other walkers for access. At this point you have a decision to make.
a) Enter the Forestry although no path is evident
b) Continue to ascend on the outside of the fence
c) Continue to ascend some distance away from the fence.
Whichever way you choose there are problems. Outside the fence the ground can be quite wet but at least you can see where you are going and you can zigzag down the other side. Inside the fence you have to push your way through the trees using your compass to maintain a northerly direction. All will take you down to the wooden bridge which you have to cross.
Crossing the bridge you ascend a short distance to a roadway passing some ruined building on your way. Turn right and follow the roadway until it starts to ascend looking out for a path on your right (757533). This path roughly follows the contour of the mountain with the Afon Doethie down on your right. Along the way you will pass other ruins which are probably those of industry since this is zinc and lead country.
Following this path will take you back to where you parked the car.
