Memories Of St Ives
I’d need Lennon and McCartney’s music,
Words Dylan sang and said
To match that lingering melody
That plays inside my head.
Of the sea measuring each moment,
Every wave an after shock
As the tide encroaches on hot sand
Nature’s eternal ticking clock.
That image of the harbour
I pack with me when I leave.
To take out on dark winter days
A trump card up my sleeve.
Now glimpsed while driving on the coast
From days so drab and cold
Proves reality more beautiful
Than dim memory can hold.
If I had a Ground Force garden
Or a huge smash hit “sit com”
A Changing Rooms makeover
Or a Top Ten Number One
A vase of Van Gogh’s flowers,
A varsity sporting “blue”
A lucky rabbit’s foot or
Someone famous that I knew
If I had all these things
When the sun’s warm and the sky blue,
I’d gladly give them all away
To walk once more with you.
To re-live all the moments
Days passing at snail’s pace
A thread woven through our lives,
With memories of this place.
