Mayor's Award
Well done to Anne Bath, Doreen Boucher, Christine Hindmarsh, Hilary Excell, Reather Durose and Marie Rees, who each received a framed Civic Testimonial Certificate. In the citation for the award, presented by the Mayor of Torfaen, Councillor Mary Barnett, it stated that the award was for different volunteer activities and involvement within their community, during which time they had worked together as volunteers at the very successful Garndiffaith Millennium Hall Lunch Club and separately were involved in many other activities which included raising money for charity, WI work, dance clubs, nursery and schools, and the Abersychan Ward communities were indeed fortunate to have such people prepared to give their time for the common good.
At the same event Brian White, of Pentwyn, also received a framed Civic Testimonial Certificate.
and in his citation the mayor pointed out the continued work for the community Brian has carried out through his long association with Pentwyn Cricket Club where the youth policy in particular is most successful. Brian also currently organises and runs two evenings a week youth club at the cricket pavilion. Brian also cares for elderly persons in his community in many ways including painting and decorating for some elderly residents, as well as helping out at many other functionswithin the Abersychan Ward.
Well Done Hazel Jenkins and Ceinwen Parker. Since our last report, Hazel Jenkins, Ceinwen
Parker, and friends, have continued to work tirelessly on behalf of the charities they support with their table top stalls and other activities. The list of recent donations include £1,000 - Health Help International; £200 - UNICEF; £100 Red Nose Day; £200 Christian Aid; £200 - Ivor Novella Memorial Statue Appeal; £50 - Andrew Bond Leukemia Treatment Fund. They would welcome any donations of bric a brac, unwanted gifts and other saleable items for their table top sales which take place once a month at Pontypool Market and at Crane Street Baptists, and at other events within the community - the next being a public table top stall sale event at Garndiffaith Millennium Hall on 2nd. June where the public can have a table for their own stall at £3 a table. Please bring any donations to these events for Hazel and Ceinwen.
Well Done Abersychan Comprehensive School. The Community Concert: “Blaenavon to Broadway 2007” involved choirs from Hillside Primary, St Peter’s CE Primary, Victoria Village Primary, Garnteg Primary, Cwmffrwdoer Primary, Pontnewynydd Primary, Penygarn Juniors and Abersychan School plus other musical groups.
The two concerts were well attended and of a very high standard. Thanks to the head, Mr Mike Conway and his staff for their hard work and for bringing the community together in showing the marvellous talent of our young people. The school staff’s performance in the hilarious ABBA spot must also be mentioned. A fuller report of the concerts is included in the school’s report on the
inside pages.
At a recent council meeting an education report stated that Abersychan Comprehensive School was an improving school and has the highest added value results of all secondary schools in Torfaen. Victoria Primary and Garnteg Primary Schools were also described in the report as improving schools with good results. So well done to you all.
Happy 80th Birthday (celebrated on the 23rd May) to Joan Dancey, with lots of love and best wishes from John, Malcolm, Jayne, Lyn and Haydn.
