Garnteg School News
This has been an exciting start to the Summer Term at Garnteg and promises to be a very busy finish indeed.
Choir
The school choir sang excerpts from Grease beautifully at the Community Concert in Blaenavon Workman’s Hall and then went on to sing for elderly members of the community at both Emlyn Nursing Home and Sid Griffiths Court.
Pupils have also visited the Lord Mayor’s Mansion in Bristol following an invite after pupils sang at Cwmbran Stadium for the 90th Anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.
Sport
Children have recently taken part in the Torfaen girls’ and boys’ 5-a-side soccer tournaments at Cwmbran Stadium and the Oakfield School tournaments competing well in all matches.
Swimming groups now travel to the new Pontypool Centre since Blaenavon has been closed.
Extra curricular activities currently taking place at school include girls’ football,
netball, keep fit, boys’ football, rugby, golf, dance, choir and recorder groups.
The school outdoor group continue to climb, cave and kayak each week and will soon take part in a four day residential activity experience organised and ran by our own staff. Activities here will include caving, climbing, walking, orienteering, ten pin bowling and a museum visit.
School Visits
Y6 will be taking part in two educational visits this term.
A London visit will include sight seeing of places of interest, museum visits, an overnight hotel stop and a trip to the theatre.
Y6 will also be camping in the Black Mountains for four days and taking part in environmental studies.
Early Year classes and Key Stage 1 classes have visited Usk College for environmental studies and will be visiting Cantref Farm for further activities.
Y4 and Y5 classes will be visiting Brecon Youth Hostel for a two day residential geography field trip. Pupils will look at rivers, land use and carry out a town and shopping study.
Environment
Pupils will also be contributing to the local environment. Y5 are taking part in an ‘adopt an area’
project locally and will work to clean up an area in need of improvement.
Y6 pupils are working with the Youth Offending Team to build a Secret Garden in the school grounds. Children have planned a water feature, benches and tables, a totem pole, hedges, crazy paving, shrubs, trees and screening.
Attendance and Behaviour
We have been recently informed by the Local Education Authority that with no pupil
exclusions for the past two years we have one the best behaviour records within the Torfaen Authority. This great achievement is matched by our attendance figures which at 95.7% is the 6th best figure of the LEA’s 48 schools.
Well done children and parents!
