Community Police Report

Violent Disorder - Prison Sentences

Following an incident of Violent Disorder at Lasgarn View and Gwyn Crescent in 2006 a prosecution was launched against a number of local men which ended in five pleading guilty or being found guilty of this serious offence, which had terrorised the inhabitants of two homes. The guilty persons and sentences:

  • Andrew Lewis - 3 years:
  • Lee Davies & Kevin Davies - 3 years 8 months:
  • Dean Rees - 3 years 10 months.

This case is an example of how residents and those faced with this type of behaviour worked together with police to show that such behaviour will not be tolerated in our community.

PACT (Partnerships and Communities Together)

This is a system organised by your community police officer being set up in all community policing wards and which I am in process of setting up for the Abersychan Ward. PACT meetings allow local people to identify the issues that they would like the police and partners to address. These meetings would have an independent chairperson and a panel, consisting of the police, local councillors, and other officials - such as the youth workers, Community Safety Partnership and local representatives. The panel would listen to concerns raised at a meeting and then be charged with responding to the three agreed main problems and report back to the next meeting on the actions they have taken or put in place. The panel is close to being selected and when in place the inaugural meeting will be advertised.

These meetings will be rotated throughout the Abersychan Ward area and the first meetings will take place at Garndiffaith Millennium Hall on Tuesday 19th June 2007 at 7pm so come along and tell us of your concerns as it is vitally important that you the public inform us the panel of what your requirements and concerns are.

Not Everbody's Problems Are The Same!

Parking – Talywain

Following numerous complaints of illegal parking outside shops, notices have been both displayed in the shops and issued to drivers of offending vehicles. I was hoping that the “softly, softly” approach would eradicate the problem but it would appear that people are still parking irresponsibly. It is with this in mind that I have decided that fixed penalty notices will be issued in the near future to vehicles that are caught transgressing. PCSO Powell and myself will be enforcing this rigorously!

Schools Football Event

The Andrew Currie Trophy took place on Sunday 13th in dismal weather conditions at Pontypool Park. The annual competition attracted 11 teams from schools around Pontypool and was officiated over by the Neighbourhood Policing Team. Victoria school provided 2 teams and Garnteg also provided a team. Despite a valiant effort from these schools neither of them progressed to the semi final stage, meaning I had to referee a final between Griffithstown and Pontnewynydd.

After a goal-less final the game went to penalties with Griffithstown taking the trophy. All players and officials/organisers are to be commended for their efforts on what was a dreadful day weather wise.
