On Saturday 3rd March, a group of Year 9 and Year 8 pupils competed in a Mock Trial competition in Cwmbran Magistrates Court. Sadly the team did not win the overall competition but all the participants were awarded certificates and a plaque for the school

Year 7 participated in “The Big Hush” event to raise a total of £1023.40 for Macmillan Cancer Support as part of Cancertalk Week in January 2007

World Book Day 2007 saw every pupil in the school receive their £1 book token. A small sum of money was raised for Book Aid International, a charity that provides books for communities in developing countries

Year 11 Geography students recently went to Barry to complete their coursework and had a successful day measuring pebbles, looking at cliffs and measuring longshore drift.

The annual school ski and snowboarding trip took place during February half-term. Nineteen pupils and three staff travelled by coach to Zell am See in Austria for six days on the slopes.

On March 20th Debbie Lear spent a day working with Year 7 pupils to produce writing and art work on the theme of School Experiences. This was funded by the Basic Skills Agency and their efforts will contribute to the commemoration of the closure of Trevethin Community School.

A number of our successful Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Participants attended a presentation evening at County Hall on Tuesday 13th March to receive their certificates.. Our pupils made a very successful presentation to the audience outlining their experiences of all aspects of the award.

Year 9 boys became Torfaen rugby champions winning all their matches and therefore entering the final stages of the Welsh Cup. An excellent team from Ysgol Cwm Rhymney were defeated in a close game but unfortunately we were knocked out in the next round by a big Rhydywaun team with the final score being 19-7.

During the Easter Holidays boys from Years 8 and 9 embarked on a school rugby tour to Paris, France. The party of thirty three boys won both matches against Agenteuil & Collège Gay Lussac.

Lewis Shaw in Year 10 gained representative honours when he was selected to run for South East Wales in the Welsh Championships.

Year 10 girls have a very successful football team and attended the Football Festival at Cwmbran Stadium. The girls had a 100% winning record and were overall winners of the festival.

A mixture of Year 10 and 11 girls took part in a 10-a-side full contact rugby tournament in Llandrindod Wells. The girls were playing in the Under-18 tournament and put in an exceptional performance. The team finished as runners up losing only to the tournament winners, Neath College.

Over one hundred Year 10 pupils participated in an interactive theatre production, “Boy Genius”, at the Gwent Theatre in Abergavenny.

During the last half term pupils from the Special Needs Resource Base have taken part in a number of visits. Year 7 visited Usk Small Animal Unit; Year 9 enjoyed an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ exhibition at Explore@Bristol,; Year 11 went to have morning coffee with the Mayor, Mary Barnett, after a tour of the Council Chambers in order to learn about the Mayor’s duties. In her column in the South Wales Argus the Mayor described the Year 11 pupils as ‘a wonderful group of courteous students who deserve to do well in their careers after school.”
Friends of Abersychan
The “Friends of Abersychan” is a group of local people who are keen to help enrich the experience of pupils at Abersychan School. The group includes parents, local residents and teachers, who meet to discuss and plan various events and activities.
These meetings are held monthly. You are cordially invited to come along to the meetings and join us in our efforts to help our young people. Community Concert: “Blaenavon to Broadway 2007”
In March 2007 two community concerts were held at Blaenavon Workmans Hall on the theme of “Blaenavon to Broadway”.
The concert included choirs from Hillside Primary, St Peter’s CE Primary, Victoria Village Primary, Garnteg Primary, Cwmffrwdoer Primary, Pontnewynydd Primary, Penygarn Juniors and Abersychan School and performances from the Abersychan School Dance Group, the Alison Lee Academy of Dance and Blaenavon Town Band. Over 250 pupils participated in a marvellous celebration of the musical and dancing talent of the young people of North Torfaen.
The whole event was coordinated by a project team from Abersychan School led by Head of Performing Arts, Shauna O’Neill.
