10th OPEN DAY

2008

Report

The society this year was again blessed with fine weather. After a lot of hard work, carried out by the society and visiting club members. The lakeside model boat displays and HAVE A GO boats were ready on time for our 10.00am start. The number of models on display being down on previous years, but still a fine display was put on. Taking into account the weather leading up to our OPEN DAY it's a wonder any one turned up, our thanks are extend to all those that did.

The Tea tent as usual was ready early, with Tea, and nibbles available for the hard working members present. To keep the older members warm or awake, as most of us now we are retired like to stay in bed in the morning, not arise at 6.30am. Like previous years, the Party tea tent was organised by Len with his wife Cynthia along with Erics wife Joan a constant supply of free warm beverages and cakes could be obtained. Club member wives, again this year organised the supply of cakes and nibbles for the day. Our thanks are extended to our male cook who produces our Welsh Cakes, a Society party must from our first open day, along with other tasty cakes.

The raffle stall this year was again organised by Eric, a variety of gifts being given to the club for its raffle on the day by members and friends of the Society.

Our secretary Colin ran the frequency control tent without a hitch, with the assistance of members wives and Bill. This year we kept to the same system we used last year. Where by captains could pre book their sailing slots on the frequency they required.

The Cardiff Marine Modellers once again ran the HAVE A GO BOATS for the general public to use. The Society is once again grateful to them for all the hard work they put in on the day. This year we used the small lake for running the boats on. This reduced the set up time and the water was a lot cleaner than if we had used the top of the lake as other years.

All daylong a varied variety of models were sailed on the lake for the public and other visiting club members to enjoy.

We had lots of questions asked by the general public about the models on display. We also managed to attract several new members to the Society, several keen junior and senior members.

Lastly our thanks are extended to all members of the public that turned up on the day to enjoy and join in with our open day activities.

Special thanks being given to Torfaen Council staff that organised, on the day, the early opening of the park and its amenities for the Societys use.

Finally we would like to say sorry to all those that attended our OPEN DAY on the long walk to the toilets, brought about by vandals destroying the toilet blocks at lakeside, even those for the disable.
