Aims & Objectives

Main Aim and Description of the Service

The overarching aim of the Musical Youth project is to reduce referrals to health care facilities through the early engagement of children and young people across Torfaen to address key health, social care and wellbeing priorities through education and prevention activities using the media of music and drama.

 

Description of service

The project will be community led and youth driven, with support of partner agencies (as outlined in the targeting of the service section).

 

The target group covers a wide range of vulnerable and disengaged children and young people, including the excluded, non attendees, disabled and looked after children; those who are experiencing difficulties with their formal education and training or who have or are at risk of coming into contact with the Youth Offending system.

 

Musical Youth project will be an interactive project aimed at developing an awareness raising, peer led education tool for all schools, outreach and detached and children and young persons groups.

 

The main aim of the project is to informally educate children and young people about adopting a healthy approach to life, through a medium they can understand and relate to.

 

Aims
  • To engage and empower children and young people to take proactive measures themselves to prevent health and social inequalities.

 

  • To raise an awareness among children and young people about the dangers and disadvantages of poor health and social exclusion.

 

  • To ensure Children and Young People recognise the implications of the following key health priorities:
  1. Teenage pregnancy
  2. Sexual health
  3. Smoking
  4. Substance misuse (Including Alcohol)
  5. Diet and exercise
  6. Crime and disorder/Anti-social behaviour

 

  • To reduce parent's anxieties in relation to children, young people, health and social care will be reduced.

 

  • To recognise the achievements of children and young people will be recognised.

 

  • To introduce and enhance skills specifically in relation to the music and drama industry

 

  • To engage children and young people in all aspects of the project to promote a sense of ownership.

 

Objectives of the Service Development (Expected outcomes)
  • Engage at least 1000 children and young people through various mechanisms i.e. schools, 
  • Youth led projects, outreach and detached and youth clubs.
  • Recruit, train support a team of at least 20 volunteers with the support of partner organisations
  • Engage at least 100 children and young people through the medium of music and drama
  • Utilise the knowledge and experience gained by groups and individuals involved in the 'Pure
  • Vibes' pilot project by adopting a mentoring scheme, which trains at least 15 mentors
  • Enable children and young people to develop soft skills including social, ICT, literacy,
  • communication, team building, working on own initiative, sense of achievement and
  • independency, which will gain at least 30 Mayors Awards and ? Open College Network qualifications
  • Local music and drama orientated businesses to motivate and up skill children, young people and volunteers to aid the development and implementation of production teams to deliver a number of live performances.
  • Promote health awareness, social inclusion and equal opportunities by engaging a wide diverse audience of parents and young people.
  • Develop the ability of the children and young people to have a positive impact on their peers and the wider community (i.e. tackle perceived fear of crime and intergenerational conflict).
  • Promote new opportunities for gaining accreditation for the children, young people and volunteers e.g. Torfaen mayors Award, Millennium Volunteers, key Skills , OCN modules and ASDAN Awards
  • To involve children and young people in decision-making process.
Raises awareness of the issues that affect young people aged between 11-25
