Torfaen Tales

Our Lovely Summer

I should have brought a jumper. Some woolly socks and an anorak would have been a good idea instead of those summer dresses. We’ve been stuck in this apartment all afternoon watching Dr Zhivago on TV. It’s been raining stair rods all day. The skylight in the kitchen is leaking and the whole place smells damp. And it’s cold. It was sweltering in here last Saturday when we arrived. It was the last of a run of hot days and I wondered why they had the heating on, but it’s on a timer which seems to come on only once a week. To dry the place out and warm it up for the next occupants I expect.

I can see the beach from the bedroom. The sand looks empty and forlorn, a dull yellow. The sea beyond it, grey and dismal, blends seamlessly with the heavy sky. I can’t even see Caldey Island. We would have liked to take a boat ride over there but they don’t sail in bad weather.

This morning we went for a walk around Tenby. Just a quick circuit of the town. Nobody much about, just a few other sodden holidaymakers. Don’t you just love the summertime!
