Torfaen Tales

Food for Thought

Lindsay wandered around the supermarket in a daze. She had eight people coming for dinner in eight hours’ time, and very little money. She browsed through the shelf of stuff nearing its sell-by date, but there was not enough of any one thing. What had possessed her to invite so many people? Blame it on George, the new man in her life. She’d invited him to dinner, then thought she’d better invite one or two more, not feeling ready for an intimate dinner for two. Next thing she knew, she’d invited eight.

Then an idea dawned. Dawdling by the aubergines, she thought it through properly. Yes, it just might work. Having made her purchases, Lindsay hurried home, for she had a full afternoon of cooking ahead of her.

George was the first to arrive. “Mmmm, something smells good,” he said with a smile.

When they were all seated around the table, Lindsay brought out trays of jacket potatoes and vegetarian chilli. She’d made a massive salad, and they were having her St Clements Pancakes for pudding, filled with sugar and lemon juice and topped with an orange sauce. The potatoes and chilli had been easy enough, but even with four frying pans on the go (two borrowed) it had taken ages to make enough pancakes. But there it was, all at a cost of less than five pounds. She was only glad that her guests had brought plenty of wine.
