Torfaen Biodiversity Partnership

Sustainable Development

The National Assembly for Wales Sustainability Committee has recently concluded its inquiries into both planning and biodiversity respectively. Reports summarising the inquiries findings and key recommendations can be found at the links below.

  • Inquiry into Biodiversity in Wales
  • Inquiry into Planning in Wales

The Welsh Assembly Government has made sustainable development their central organising principle.

Sustainable Development in Wales

In Wales, we want to move towards sustainable development by:

  • improving the economy, and social and environmental wellbeing of people and communities - achieving a better quality of life for us and future generations;
  • promoting fair and safe communities and equal opportunities; and
  • supporting our natural and cultural environments and respecting their limits - we do this by only using our fair share of resources and sustaining our cultural legacy.

How will WAG measure Sustainable Development?

There are a number of key things they will be monitoring and these are the Headline Indicators. These indicators should be considered together, not individually, to give an overview of progress towards becoming a sustainable nation.

The indicators are:

  • Sustainable resource use - as measured using Wales’ Ecological Footprint;
  • Sustaining the environment - percentage of Biodiversity Action Plan species and habitats recorded as stable or increasing;
  • A sustainable economy - Gross Value Added (GVA) and GVA per head;
  • A sustainable society - percentage of the population in low-income households; and Wellbeing.

WAG will publish a report each year to show the progress that they have made.

Wellbeing

Wellbeing is a positive physical, social and mental state. It requires that:

  • basic needs are met;
  • individuals have a sense of purpose;
  • they feel able to reach personal goals and take part in society.

Wellbeing is enhanced by:

  • supportive personal relationships;
  • strong and inclusive communities;
  • good health;
  • financial and personal security;
  • rewarding employment; and
  • a healthy and attractive environment.
