Why has the project been initiated?
Historical background
Ebenezer chapel was founded by the Rev. Edmund Jones (The prophet of the Tranch). He was minister of Ebenezer from 1740-1793 and his grave and memorial is situated in a prominent position in the churchyard . Since 1793 the churchyard has been used as a community graveyard for the eastern valley and beyond. Read more of our history|
For many years the churchyard has become overgrown with brambles, scrub, trees and weed grass, smothering graves and paths.
Concerns About Maintainence
Church members over the years have contributed funds and given their services to maintain access to the graves but this has become increasingly difficult with ageing and declining membership. Therefore this incentive has been set up with in collaboration with Garnsychan partnership for funding to be applied for.
Seeking Funding
As result of this initiative we have been successful in securing funding from a number of public and private sources. It must be mentioned that our more successful fund raising activities have been from events, family, friends and local community.
History and Heritage
There are numerous graves in remembrance of the people who shaped industrial and academic activities of the surrounding district and thanks to a small group of volunteers, the graveyard has now been cleared and access made available for families to visit their individual graves. Work on the second phase is progressing to plant trees, wild flowers and create a nature conservation area with nature and heritage trail.
