Engagements

Today’s modern society accept that people can live together and share the same practises as those of married couples without in fact getting married. It was customary but not compulsory to get engaged to the person you wanted to share the rest of your life with and was an honourable commitment. Getting engaged meant you had basically signed into a contract to marry your partner. Indeed, it could be a matter of such importance that in some cases where the gentleman had reneged on his promise of marriage, that Court proceedings could be brought upon such persons.

These engagements were announced in the newspapers and can be found along with the births, marriages and deaths column. Although these events were not regularly entered they would certainly add to any genealogists interest.

Although E.G.G.R.A has not undertaken any transcribing of engagements, they can be found in any newspapers at Cwmbran Library; County Records Office, Cwmbran and Newport Reference Library, Newport.
