For Laura Livesey, signing up for a modelling agency was a natural progression of several separate strands of her life.

Not only has she got a proven track record of performing on the stage and has taken part in beauty pageants, but she also works as a beauty consultant.

Having taken part in musicals such as Singing in the Rain and Carousel at an early age her love of performing led her to audition for reality shows such as Pop Idol.

And her passion eventually led to a fateful catwalk competition in Colwyn Bay that helped her sashay all the way to China.

"It all started when I won that competition and won a contract with a local agency," she said, "I decided to enter because I like performing."

That win led to her taking part in this year's Miss Wales competition. And clinching the runner-up spot helped secure her a trip to China for the Miss Asia-Pacific show.

Her ambition now is to take part in the Miss World competition.

"I like meeting all the new girls, learning about all the cultures and I love getting up on stage," she said.

"The interest in pageants is quite phenomenal.

"A lot of people don't realise we still have Miss Wales and when they hear about it they're really interested."

She added, "I think looking good is very important especially in the kind of industry we're in.

"It's not necessarily always about being glamorous, but just basically looking after yourself and being presentable."

A world away from glamorous trips to China, Laura also finds time to hold dance and drama workshops for children at after-school clubs in her spare time.

"I think this stands me in good stead, along with my experience of entering beauty contests, because it has boosted my confidence and made me realise that when all eyes are on you, you have to behave professionally at all times. "While you have to have the personality and the looks to get on in modelling, so much of it is about having the right attitude and being able to do the job well."
