C is For...
Cabbage: Cabbage is thought to help prevent cancer of the colon, relieve gastric ulcers and is an excellent source of vitimin C. It is a vitamin rich food and an average slice has only 16 calories. Before you all run to the supermarket to stock up it does have its drawbacks. Cabbage can cause flatulence (wind) so although you may lose weight you may also lose some friends along the way if you eat too much.
Caffeine: Caffeine is usually found in tea, coffee and some soft drinks however not many people realise that it is also found in chocolate. Although it can be useful as a stimulant - to buck you up when you are feeling down - it can also cause problems such as insomnia, migraine and excessive amounts can cause palpitations so it is best to control the amount that you consume. Mums beware; two glasses of cola or half a bar of dark chocolate is enough to stop your children from sleeping!
Cakes and Pastries: enough said. Lots of downpoints and no benefits - High in calories and unsaturated fats. Avoid if possible but if you get the urge then moderation is the key word.
Carrots: carrots are an excellent source of beta-carotene. They really can help with your eyesight as they contain Vitamin A which helps prevent night-blindness. Surprisingly they are better for you when they are cooked rather than raw. Unless the carrots are organic it is best to cut off the tops and peel them to remove any traces of pesticide used to control the 'carrot fly' pest.
Cheese: an excellent source of protein and a rich source of calcium however some cheeses are high in saturated fats and calories. It may also cause migraines and other allergic reactions in susceptible people. According to some sources, chewing cheese can help prevent cavities caused by sugar as it prevents the formation of acids in the mouth.
