About Race For Life

Race For Life 2007

Photograph of a little girl playing in the rainWith all the heavy rainfall that the track had received, for a split moment it looked as if the 2007 Race For Life which was being held on Sunday 1st July would be cancelled along with numerous others up and down the country. However the determination of the organisers and the runners, walkers and their supporters shone through and a great day was had by all.

The rain really didn't dampen anyone's spirts and the presence of the Red Dragon Radio road-show and the multi-coloured array of large umbrellas - some even sheltering the participants while they took part in the aerobics warm up session - gave a carnival feel to the whole proceeding.

According to Race For Life "Since it started in 1994, Race for Life has grown to become the UK’s biggest women-only fundraising event. All the money raised by our participants helps fund the crucial work of Cancer Research UK – the world’s leading independent organisation dedicated to cancer research".

Over £140 million has been raised from past events and with an additional estimated £60 million that is expected to be raised this year that amounts to a massive £200 million.

It is a celebration of those who lost their lives to cancer but more importantly those who have survived it - something that would not be possible without the invaluable research carried out by cancer charities such as Cancer Research UK| and Tenovus|.

This year it was wonderful to see the number of runners and walkers who instead of simply writing names had put photographs of their loved ones on their backs.  It gave a feeling of optimism and hope to passers-by as they realised that these individuals had not only survived cancer but were able to come along and share the day with their loved ones.

If you haven't already, it's still not too late to make a donation or sponsor someone who took part in the Torfaen Race as many of them have online sponsorship pages.
