How It Works
How does the service work?
Torfaen County Borough Council works in partnership with the allotment movement in the Borough. Allotment sites are managed directly by the service users.
There are 39 allotment sites in Torfaen and many have vacant plots.
Each allotment site is now called an association.
The responsibility for letting plots and maintaining waiting lists etc. rests with the secretary of each association.
An organisational chart is available that shows the relationship between the Council's Leisure Youth and Cultural Services Division and two Group Committees (or Federations) of allotment users who undertake most of the day-to-day responsibilities. These committees are made up of representatives from each site.
The Eastern Valley Group Committee, have the responsibility to manage 19 sites from Pontypool to Blaenavon.
The Cwmbran and South Torfaen Group Committee, have the same responsibility to manage 20 sites in the Cwmbran area.
The council provides each of these group committees with an annual budget, which they can spend on as many or as few sites as they wish. The understanding is that they can determine their own priorities and arrange the work at a time convenient to them.
