Nothing can beat the taste of fruit, vegetables and herbs picked fresh from your garden or

allotment.

In recent years, the health benefits of fresh vegetables and fruit has been recognised more and more. Vegetable gardening especially, is a hobby now undertaken by millions all over the world, with fruit and herbs being a close second.

The way we live today has changed dramatically over the past few decades.  Once we relied on growing fruit and vegetables ourselves in order to provide for our families, however, we now have the convenience of Supermarkets to provide what we need. Nothing wrong with that?

However, wouldn't you much rather pick a cob of sweet corn from the garden or plot than buy one that has possibly travelled hundreds of miles over a period of time to be placed on a shelf in a Supermarket?

Without question, the Supermarket cob will have long started its process of turning the sugars into starch and will not taste anything like one that has just been picked.

Organic gardening is on the increase and people are becoming more aware of what they eat and how crops have been treated.  Commercial growers spray crops regardless of whether it's needed in order to meet the demands of the Supermarkets who in turn, provide people with perfect crops, unblemished, washed and presented nicely in plastic bags.

Years ago, people didn't bother with chemicals and pesticides to get the most from their plot.  So why should we now?

It doesn't matter what size of garden you have, there is always scope to grow something that you can ultimately eat.  If space is an issue, why not think about applying for an Allotment?  There are 39 sites througout Torfaen, some with vacancies.

The number of people taking on an Allotment throughout the UK is on a dramatic increase.

Vegetable and fruit growing will be a challenge for some, but don't be too disheartened if your carrots were attacked by the dreaded carrot fly, or some of your seeds failed to germinate etc.  All is not doomed!

Yes, you may have setbacks, but your successes will be far greater.  It's an enjoyable learning curve with plenty of old hands close by to provide sound practical advice and handy tips of the trade.

Having an allotment allows individuals to organise and cultivate their plot in order to meet their own specific requirements and lifestyle.  As part of the experience of having an allotment, you will meet people from many different walks of life and undoubtably develop good friends at the same time.
