photograph of Best of Breed cattle competitors at last year's Usk showThousands of visitors are expected in Usk on Saturday for the last farming show of the season.

The main focus for the Usk Show will be horses, dogs and rabbits as the traditional displays of features cattle, sheep and goats will be absent.

As with all the other farming shows this year, restrictions were placed on the movement of livestock following an outbreak of foot and mouth in Surrey.

Fiona Jenkins, general secretary of the show, said although the Assembly lifted restrictions on livestock in shows earlier this week, the announcement came too late for farmers to change their plans.

There is also plenty of fun for families in store, with falconry displays, vintage tractors, and rural craft demonstrations.

The show is held at the Usk Showground from 9am to 6pm, with entry fees at £8 for adult, £5 for OAPs and £2 for children.

Agriculture show but no livestock

A major Gwent attraction will go ahead next week but will be hit hard by livestock movement restrictions say organisers.

There'll be no cattle, sheep, pigs or goats at this year's Bedwelty Agricultural Show.

Defra restrictions limiting the movement of livestock to a 3km radius has meant the show's organisers had to radically review their plans for the show on August 25.

"We had to make a decision based on the restrictions," said secretary Warren Hodson.

"It's very sad we won't be having any livestock but the show is going ahead with all the usual horse and dog categories."

As well as the Blackwood Canine Society other attractions include trade stands, a fun fair and a gun dog display.

Blackwood Show Ground plays host to the show on Saturday.

The show is free for pedestrians and costs £5 for car drivers.

*It's a busy weekend for the show ground which hosts the The event features performances from street entertainers, live music and white-knuckle rides on the funfair. The highlight of the festival is the nightglow and fireworks display, which takes place on the Sunday evening.
