Power Station
Sustainable Community Development
The Power Station is an exciting new venture in the St Dials area of South Cwmbran. A new eye-catching building can be seen by the Blenheim Road shops area, (the former site of Derwent House). It is the base for adult learning and a community capacity building.
The Power Station is Torfaen's first Green Building, an example of sustainable development using materials that can be replaced by natural means wherever possible. Trees removed from the site were recycled as chippings on the site as part of the landscaping process.
It is also Torfaen's first Intelligent Building, using new technology to reduce the energy costs of running a building of its size. For example:
-
Heat energy is taken from deep underground and used to warm the building.
-
Rainwater is collected to provide "grey" water for toilet flushing, irrigation etc. Information on Rainwater harvesting.
-
Unpowered ventilation using a large central column (stack) to promote the movement of air throughout the building keeps energy costs down by removing the need for expensive air conditioning systems. Information on passive ventilation.
