  • To support and strengthen concepts learnt in the classroom

  • To nurture the ability to work indivdually and a sense of responsibility within the individual

Practicalities

  • All departments refer to homework within their assessment policies and it is part and parcel of the scheme of work. A homework timetable is provided for each year group in key stages 3 and 4.
  • It is expected that all pupils, regardless of ability will receive structured work to complete outside the school curriculum.
  • The school has a marking policy (please refer to the Homework Diary). Even though it is not always appropriate or practical to formally mark all pieces of work, each pupil will receive oral feedback on all homework tasks.
  • The staff record all homework tasks in their mark books. If a problem arises it is expected that staff will communicate through the homework diary. Some departments will also send a formal letter home highlighting the matter.
  • If a pupil does not complete homework tasks, the Head of Department will discipline the pupil and attempt to deal with the problem before informing the Pastoral Team.

Bullying policy

As a school that regards highly the welfare of the individual, both mentally and socially, we oppose activities that cause physical or psychological harm to our pupils. Bullying is a word that has several meanings, but it may be defined as follows:

Threatening behaviour or activities by an individual or individuals that continues over a period of time and, as a result will cause physical and/or

psychological harm to another individual.

At Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw we try to educate our pupils about the dangers of bullying through:

1. Personal and Social Education lessons.

2. An effective Pastoral System.

3.   An Anti-Bullying Charter

Dealing with cases of bullying

In cases of bullying, the following steps are taken:

We deal with every allegation of bullying in a sensitive manner.

Any accusations of bullying are taken seriously. When a case of bullying is brought to the attention of any member of staff, the information is given to the appropriate Head of Year. The Head of Year conducts a thorough investigation, speaking to the victim, the accused bully and independent witnesses. All parties involved are treated equally and given an opportunity to explain what has happened. The Head of Year will then record the information on paper.

Dealing with the bully

  • We ensure that all bullies are dealt with and that they realise why bullying is unacceptable.
  • The punishment is agreed.
  • Our expectations of the pupil’s behaviour are clearly outlined and all suitable persons (including the parents) are notified.

Further action

We contact the parents of the victim and the bully to inform them of the incident and the disciplinary steps taken by the school. The implications of any further incidents of bullying are highlighted to both the bully and his parents.

Polisi addysg rhyw

Dysgir agweddau gwyddonol o Addysg Rhyw yn y Cwricwlwm Gwyddoniaeth. Mae'r gwersi yma yn stadudol, h.y. mae rhaid i bob disgybl eu mynychu.

Yn ogystal â hyn mae yna raglen gynhwysfawr o wersi addysg rhyw fel rhan o'r gwersi Addysg Bersonol a Chymdeithasol. Delir â phynciau fel teimladau, aeddfedu rhywiol, atal cenhedlu, clefydau rhywiol, a cheir cyfle i drafod materion rhywiol. Os nad yw rhiant yn dymuno i blentyn fynychu'r gwersi hyn, dylid cysylltu â'r ysgol.

Sex education policy

Scientific aspects of Sex Education are taught in the Science Curriculum. These lessons are statutory, i.e. all pupils must attend.

As well as these lessons, there is a comprehensive programme of sex education as part of the Personal and Social Education lessons. Subjects such as feelings, emotions, sexual maturity, sexual diseases and contraception are dealt with. There is also an opportunity to discuss any sexual matter.

If parents do not wish a child to attend these lessons, they should contact the school to discuss the matter.

Camdrin Blant

Caiff camdrin plant ei drafod yn y cwricwlwm o dan ymbarel Addysg Bersonol a Chymdeithasol. Bydd yr ysgol yn delio ag unrhyw achos a godir, yn ôl polisi Camdrin Plant Torfaen.
