Kilner Education

Why Private Tuition?

There are many reasons why you might choose Private Tuition.

For Children

  • Your child gets the full attention of the tutor, without the distractions from other children that occur in a typical classroom situation.
  • Learning patterns tailored to the specific needs of your child.
  • The chance for your child to learn at the pace that suits them best.
  • If your child has a particular talent or interest in a subject, it can be developed more easily, without having to be held back by classmates.  Having this 'little bit extra' can often be the deciding factor that enables a child to get the best exam grades and to distinguish themselves in a competitive academic environment e.g. for university places.
  • Conversely, if your child needs more support, or more time to learn a topic, there is no problem with them being 'left behind' by the rest of the class.  A few additional lessons can enable a child who is struggling with a topic in school to 'catch up' with his or her peers.
  • Some children simply do not flourish in the classroom environment.  This is especially true of quieter, less confident children, who are uncomfortable in the often noisy and competitive classroom situtation.
  • Private tuition can be focused on a subject that is outside the National Curriculum, providing a broader, more rounded education.

For Adults

  • For many adults, the thought of returning to a classroom environment can be intimidating, particularly if it involves learning with younger people.  Private lessons remove much of the potential 'fear factor' about learning with others.
  • Just like with children, the classes can be suited to whatever you need, and you get to work at your own pace.
  • You might want to improve your basic skills in things like Maths or English.
  • You may wish to learn something very specific, for which classes are simply not available at your local college.  This might be to help with a future promotion at work, to be able to support and help your children, or just because you are interested in something for its own sake.
  • Perhaps you just want to refresh your mind and get up to date with something that you learned a long time ago.

What You Can Expect?

  • That I will turn up on time, and teach appropriate, up to date sessions for the full time asked for.
  • That learning breaks will be scheduled as appropriate. (Attention span for an adult is normally no more than 45 minutes.  For child it is often less).
  • That sessions will be flexible, to suit your needs.  If you need to cancel a session, or require it at a different time from usual, that can usually be arranged, provided at least 24 hours notice is given.

Late Cancellations

  • Regrettably, sessions cancelled at less than 24 hours notice, without good reason, will be charged at a rate of £10 per hour.  Similarly, sessions for which I attend as asked, and for which the student is absent, will also be charged at £10 per hour.  This is to cover my travel costs.  Please try to give 24 hours notice of cancellations whenever possible.
