Make sure you register
The electoral canvass starts in September. Each household will receive an electoral registration form which asks for the names of all eligible electors living in your household. Names entered on the electoral register will be eligible to vote at the National Assembly Elections in May 2007.
The forms are pre-printed with the details of electors currently registered at each property. If the details are incorrect amend and return the form. If the information is correct you can register by using a freephone telephone number or on the Internet. If you haven’t received a form by mid September or need help call 01495 762200.
Don’t forget, if you move during the year your details can be updated. You can get a form from any Council office, by visiting www.torfaen.gov.uk/living|, or by calling 01495 762200. It’s a legal requirement and you need to be on it to vote in all UK elections and referendums. You are not automatically registered even if you pay Council Tax.
You can register to vote if you are:
16 years old or over; and a British, Irish, Commonwealth or European Union citizen.
If you are 16 or 17, you can only register if you will be 18 within the lifetime of the electoral register. The register being compiled this autumn lasts from 1 December 2006 to 30 November 2007. You cannot vote until you are 18.
When can I register? - Most people register between September and November every year when the local council delivers a registration form to your home.
However, you can also register throughout the year as the register is updated every month. This is useful if you move home and need to register at your new address.
