Find Elvis in Cwmbran
Hundreds of people are expected to take part in a “Search for Elvis” walk through Cwmbran. The tongue in cheek event is a fun way to get people to find out more about the area they live in and also what is available at Torfaen’s newest community base. The walk is from Thornhill to the Power Station in St Dials where a huge community event is being held to encourage people to explore its facilities. It’s on Sunday 1 October. The walk starts at 12.30pm from the top of Hafren Road.
Along the half mile route walkers will answer clues and then hand their entry form to the man himself, ‘Elvis Presley’, who will be somewhere in or around the Power Station. Prizes include an original Elvis 78 record and dinner for two at the Tamarind. Events at the Power Station start at 1pm.
Budding Alan Sugars can take part in an entrepreneur masterclass and anyone who wants to try a new way to keep fit can check out Indian dancing. Men who aren’t very creative in the kitchen will have the chance to learn how to cook some basic meals.
Do you know the number of calories in your favourite takeaway dish? Chefs from the Tamarind will show that Indian food isn’t always high in calories. A burger stand will also show types of burgers and their different fat content. Other highlights include junior sport classes, a jazz band, art competition and a poet, who will write a poem about you ‘while you wait.’
It’s part of a weekend of fun also involving Greenmeadow community farm. On Saturday 30 September a family learning fun day has been organised with free entry.
Councillor Bob Wellington, Leader of Torfaen Council, said: “We are using Elvis as a fun way to attract people along. I’d like to thank the volunteer who is dressing up as the King, but I won’t reveal his real identity. This weekend of fun is not just for local residents. I would like to see people of all ages from across Torfaen come along and find out more about the Power Station.”
