Children get active
A popular scheme which means doctors can prescribe patients free fitness classes at Torfaen leisure centres now includes children.
Torfaen Council’s Exercise for Life classes are run every week for children aged between seven and 15 at Cwmbran Stadium and Blaenavon leisure centre. They include gym lessons and general fitness sessions including aerobics and fun games. All the classes are supervised by qualified fitness instructors.
Torfaen doctors can refer their young patients to a series of sessions over four months. Children can also be referred by their parents who can apply for them to take part.
Steve Prosser, Torfaen Council’s Young Person’s Exercise for Life facilitator, said: "These sessions are great for children who have a weight problem or who aren’t very active. They are an excellent introduction to exercise. Some of the children who have taken part have gone on to join their school sports teams. Any parent who thinks their child would benefit from taking part should call me or Stephanie Peckham on 01633 627128."
