March 2007 Edition

Torfaen Talks is the Council’s free Community Newspaper which is sent to all homes in Torfaen every eight weeks

Twin Bin - the next stage

Another 7,300 homes in Cwmbran will soon be joining the Twin Bin scheme. So far over 16,700 of you are helping the environment by separating your waste into different coloured bins and using the black box.

Now homes in Coed Eva, Henllys, Llantarnam, Hollybush, Ty Canol, St Dials and Two Locks will be taking part. Letters have been sent to all the homes and the new green bin will be delivered soon.

Why Twin Bin?

The UK is running out of space for rubbish which is why all councils have been set Government targets to reduce the amount of rubbish sent to landfill. Torfaen must recycle or compost at least 40% of household rubbish by 2010. We currently recycle around 25%.

When does it start?

By 2009 all households in the north of Torfaen will also be taking part.

How does it work?

You will still get a wheelie bin collection each week but what we collect each week will be different. We will collect the green wheelie bin for kitchen food scraps and garden waste one week followed by the black wheelie bin for general household rubbish the next. The black box will continue to be collected every week.

Wrap your kitchen food scraps in old newspapers or magazines and put them in your green binCardboard cannot be placed in the green bin. We will introduce local recycling sites for cardboard as each area comes on line. Household cardboard can also be taken to the Household Waste Recycling Centre in New Inn.

The Council is advising residents to wrap their kitchen food scraps in newspaper or magazines before placing them in the green bin and to keep the bin lid closed. Grass cuttings and other garden waste should not cause smells over a two week period as they decompose down relatively slowly.
