Council Tax Benefit
How could I pay less?
If you are on a low income or do not work, council tax benefit could help pay towards some or all or your council tax bill, even if you own your home.
How is council tax benefit worked out?
The Council will work out if you qualify for help, taking into account your individual circumstances. This will include your age and whether you live alone.
How do I claim council tax benefit?
You will need to complete an application form. In the first instance contact one of our customer centres. They will be able to provide you with advice about how to claim and the information you will need to provide.
As part of the streamlined claim process introduced by Torfaen, all new claimants applying for housing benefit and council tax benefit via the Council will be interviewed by a benefit assessor or visiting officer. The interview will normally take place at a customer centre, but if you are unable to get to our offices we will visit you at home.
How long before I get a decision?
The Council’s benefit service currently processes 95 per cent of new claims within fourteen days of receiving all information.
