Help for drug users
The Drug Interventions Programme (DIP) is a new Welsh Assembly Government and Home Office funded initiative that started in Gwent last April. It aims to get adult drug abusers out of crime and into treatment.
Criminal justice, drug treatment and aftercare agencies work together to deliver tailored packages of treatment and care. These include medical assistance, one-to-one support, help to access appropriate accommodation, training, employment and diversionary activities.
The Torfaen DIP Team will soon relocate to the new multi-agency substance misuse base being built in
Pontypool. John (name changed) has enjoyed the success of joint working. He had a 24 year drug-using history and met the DIP Team on a six month programme of support and medical treatment after being released from prison.
During this time, John accessed training to update his qualifications, increasing his chances of employment. He said: “I feel confident that with support, the right medication, and the prospect of employment, I won’t go back to drugs and prison. I only wish DIP was around before.”
