The Woodlands Field Group was formed to regenerate a piece of wasteland which is surrounded by houses. The ground was used as a dumping ground for many years for rubbish and for burning out cars. Councilor Michael Davies than had a fence erected around the field to put a stop to the littering and make it green playing field.
Here is the Woodlands field back in 1998, before work started. It was used for dumping rubbish and fly tipping.
Many offices in the local Authority were in a catch 22 situation as when they cleaned it up and put it in reasonable condition it always ended up back the same as before. Housing spent a fortune on paying companies to take away vehicles that were burnt out, and Many people who didn’t live in the community escaped through this way and gave this community a very bad name.
Throughout Wales everyone knew the name Woodlands because it always had bad publicity. Good news is better than bad news but you must remember that good news does not sell newspapers.
Shabby repairs in this community were happening to often and nobody wanted to spend any money in this area.
The Woodlands field Group have been very successful in funding streams and have once again been successful with more fund’s. This is making Penygarn a much better place for people to live and enjoy. some people are now starting to get involved with their community. Making improvements around the estate is good for community spirit.
Living with each other and helping each other Is what the name community is all about.
