There has always been a close connection between licensed premises and the use of so called ‘dance or recreational drugs’. Even the best efforts of licensees to keep these drugs out can sometimes fail. Recently there has been a more sinister twist to this with the advent of the ‘date rape’ drugs.

There are several drugs that are used in order to render a person open to sexual attack. You will note that we have not used the word ‘female’ because there have been instances in the UK where the rape has been homosexual. The actual ‘date rape’ drug is Rohypnol and, if placed in a liquid, it will turn the liquid bright blue. However, in poor lighting areas and with very dark coloured drinks this proves to be quite ineffectual.

Another drug also mistakenly called a date rape drug is ‘Gammahydroxybuterate', more commonly known as GHB. This is usually in liquid form and contained in small tablet type containers or 35mm film containers.

There have been increased instances in the use of these drugs.

Gwent Police offer the following advice;

Don’t leave drinks unattended

Don’t accept drinks from strangers

Avoid unfamiliar places

Look after your mates and they will look after you
