Older People: Memory

If you sometimes look for the milk in the microwave or can't find your keys, and occasionally wonder why you walked into your bedroom don't worry, you are acting normally - if you are over 45! When younger people forget things it is not suggested that their age is the reason for their 'lapse of memory'.

It is thought by scientists, that older people who are regularly involved in activities that stimulate their mental ability (Scrabble, Crosswords, Handicrafts and other hobbies. etc) maintain their memory power better than those who don't. We usually cope by making lists, or using imagery to aid our failing memories. Our older minds have stores of memories and sometimes other emotional factors that interfere with our train of thought, and sidetrack our intended actions. (Going into the bedroom and forgetting why)

It has been recognised that our older brains store a vast amount of experience that we can draw on and share. At 50 the majority of people are still physically and mentally extremely active; given the chance they are an asset to our society.
