South East Wales Racial Equality Council

South East Wales Racial Equality Council

SEWREC is an independent registered charity (No. 1001556) based in Newport, but serving the local authority areas of Blaenau-Gwent, Monmouthshire, Newport and Torfaen.

We provide information, advice and support for individuals, policy advice to public and voluntary sector bodies and advice and support to community based organisations working in the equalities field.

SEWREC has three main areas of work:

  • Work directly related to discrimination and harassment;
  • Work within communities; and
  • Support for other agencies that are or should be working with, or providing a services to, BME residents.

Fighting Discrimination

SEWREC provides a casework service to people who believe that they have been discriminated against. We also provide a confidential advice and support service to victims of racial harassment, whether they wish to make a formal complaint or not.

Additionally, we provide support to the local multi-agency forums on hate crime in Blaenau-Gwent, Monmouthshire, Newport and Torfaen.

Supporting Communities

SEWREC is not a community organisation, but we do support BME community groups and community groups working in areas with high BME populations. We also support projects that are intended to promote BME involvement in 'mainstream' groups and activities.

We also publish a quarterly newsletter that is available by contacting the email address at the top of the page.

Working with Others

Wherever possible SEWREC works with other agencies to ensure that their services reach the Minority Ethnic community. For example SEWREC helped to write the Community Plan for Newport, is a member of the Welsh Assembly Government's Task & Finish Group on Child Protection for BME Children and helps to manage the Equalities Exchange with the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC).

We also provide equality training using Open College Network (OCN) accredited trainers and support public consultation exercises.
