Home Security Measures

by Mark Zbudowskyj of Gwent Alarms

Any security measures taken will reduce the chance and impact of a break-in.

The main deterrents are as follows:-

  • Visit the Gwent Alarms websiteAn intruder alarm
  • Security lighting
  • Closed circuit camera systems
  • Fencing and barriers
  • Additional locks and shutters
  • Neighbourhood watch schemes

Generally depending on the area concerned and the risks involved security measures would include some or all of the above options.

A professionally installed intruder alarm will take between one and two days to install in a domestic property. You can expect a combination of door contacts break glass detectors and A bell box will help to deter potential burglarsvolumetric devices to cover rooms doors and windows. Once activated internal and external sounders will be triggered as well as in some cases remote signalling devices alerting key holders or the police via receiving centres.

External bell boxes act as a visible deterrent as well generating a loud audible presence. More sophisticated devices are also available to cover specific risks.

Passive infra red driven external lighting is a very good option . Quite often well it areas will deter uninvited visitors and also provide convenient and useful lighting for the occupant.

Again more complex lighting systems exist. For example the opal system not only provides external lighting but provides internal warning via buzzers and zoning and a degree of manual and automatic control.

GET Black White basic CCTV system available at ArgosCamera systems costs can vary hugely.  Argos currently sell a very affordable option from under £30.00 giving you a black and white image on you own TV that can easily be installed by any average DIYer.

Fencing and barriers are self explanatory and prevention is better than the cure as they say.

Additional locks are also a good idea for doors and windows not forgetting sheds garages and outhouses. To sum up the more difficult you can make it for the intruder the less likely you are to suffer a break-in.

Lastly Neighbourhood watch schemes and the like are zero cost options which are every bit as effective as the option listed above if properly organised. The police are keen to receive accurate and useful information about suspicious activity and often a call from the general public can help track and thwart a potential criminal act.
