Fire Safety

Free Blanket Checks

Free Electric Blanket Safety Checks for the Over 60s.

Research has shown that as many as 5000 fires per year are caused by old and faulty electric blankets, with around 20 people killed and up to 100 injured as a result. Unfortunately it is the older generation that is most at risk with as many as 89% of those injured in such accidents being over the age of 65.

As winter approaches, the good news is that Torfaen residents over the age of 60 will soon have the opportunity to have their electric blankets checked for safety. This year, the checks will be available between 9.30 and 4.30 pm over three days:

  • Wednesday 3rd October - Constitutional Club, Old James Street, Blaenavon
  • Thursday 4th October - Pontypool Indoor Market
  • Friday 5th October - Cwmbran Library, Gwent Square, Cwmbran

At each of the events, a range of other agencies will be on hand to offer information, advice and much more all targeted at older residents. In order to take advantage of all that is on offer, it is hoped that as many as possible will attend in person. However, arrangements are in place to provide a collection and delivery service to ensure that the housebound are able to have their electric blankets checked without inconvenience.

As in previous years, a free replacement electric blanket will be provided to residents whose own blanket is found upon testing to be unsafe. This offer is limited to the over 60's only and to one electric blanket per household.

As demand for electric blanket safety checks is always high, an appointments only system will operate. For further information, to book an appointment or to arrange a collection in the case of housebound residents, the Trading Standards Service can be contacted on 01633 648384

Top Tips for Staying Safe with Your Electric Blanket

1. Treat your Electric Blanket with Care

Remember that your blanket is an electric appliance and needs to be treated carefully! The following steps should help avoid a number of problems developing in the early life of a blanket.

  • Always follow the manufacturer's instructions If your blanket is an under-blanket, check regularly that it is securely tied in position around the mattress.
  • Creased or curled blankets can overheat.
  • Always switch under-blankets off before getting into bed.
  • When not in use, for example during the summer, an electric blanket may be left in position on the bed. If it is removed it should be rolled carefully rather than folded.
  • Don't use an electric blanket and a hot water bottle at the same time.
  • If your blanket should get wet, never switch it on to dry it out.
2. Check Regularly for Danger Signs

Unfortunately, as electric blankets get older, problems can start to occur. A number of danger signs can be simple to spot, for example :-

  • The fabric is worn or frayed
  • The electrical flex is damaged or worn
  • The ties for securing the blanket to the bed are damaged or missing Scorch marks are in evidence
  • Any loose electrical connections
  • The internal heating wires are damaged or have moved about inside the blanket, with the possibility of touching each other.
  • The old BEAB safety mark. If this mark is present on your blanket, it means that it will not comply with the latest safety standards.
3. Bring Your Electric Blanket along for Regular Safety Checks

In addition to the above, it is important to have electric blankets checked for safety by an expert tester, ideally once a year.
