Mothers Union

Mothers Union Prayer

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who gave marriage to be a source of blessing, we thank you for family life, with all its joys and sorrows.

May we know your presence and peace in our homes, fill them with your love and use them to your glory.

Bless all who are married and every parent and child.

Pour out upon us your Holy Spirit, that we may truly love and serve you.

Bless the members of the Mothers' Union throughout the World, unite us in prayer and worship, in love and service, that, strengthened by your grace, we may seek to do your will; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

In 1851 George Sumner was appointed as rector of Old Alresford, hampshire. It was here that Mary Sumner held the first Mothers Union meeting in 1876, after the birth of her first grandchild.

The Original Card of Membership 1876

"Remember that your Children are given up, body and soul, to Jesus Christ in Holy Baptism and that your duty is to train them for His Service"

Try by God's help, to make them obedient, truthful and pure.
Never allow coarse jests, bad, angry words or low talk in your house. Speak gently.
You are strongly advised never to give your children beer, wine or spirits without the doctors orders, or send young people to the public house.
Do not allow your girls to go about the streets at night and keep them from unsafe companions and from dangerous amusements.
Be careful that your children not read bad books or public print.
Set them a good example in word and deed.
Kneel down and pray to God morning and evening and teach your children to pray.

Try to read a few verses of the Bible daily and to come to Church as regularly as possible. If you repent truly of your sins and desire with all your heart to love and follow Jesus, come to Holy Communion and feed on Him by faith, then will your soul be strengthened and refreshed.

Jesus said, "Do this in rememberance of Me" It was his dying command.

Our branch of Mothers Union meets every first Thursday of the month except August and December, when we make arrangements for a trip and a Christmas Lunch. We meet in Torfaens People Centre, Pontypool, which is convenient for the buses and has car parks near by.
