Helping Hands

Sure Start's Helping Hands runs a wide range of sessions in a number of venues throughout Torfaen, where trained project workers offer a range of activities that support parents and their children.

Pontnewynydd

Sure Start at The Ambulance Hall, Pontnewynydd

Sure Start at Pontnewynydd is situated in the Ambulance Hall on Hospital Road.

 

It offers services to families with children under 4 years of age who live in the local area.

The Sure Start facilities, offered are set out within the hall and includes a free crèche area offering a variety of stimulating play equipment, an area for wet play and painting, reading and storytelling corner. Parent training activities take place alongside the crèche.

What Services does Sure Start Offer?

For children:

The aim of Sure Start is to offer play activities that allow children the best possible start as they enter school. To assist this, children attending the crèche are cared for by trained staff who offer a varied programme of age related play activities using play equipment and materials that stimulate the skills and development of the child.

 

A fun and friendly environment is offered by the staff, which allows children to build trust and develop in a relaxed environment. The play activities offered help promote children's development in the following areas:

  • Social
  • Physical
  • Intellectual
  • Cognitive
  • Emotional

For parents:

The Parent Support Programme offers parents the opportunity to take part in a varied programme of activities, which can include:

  • Health Visitor Drop-In
  • Community Dental Team
  • Play activities to help a child's development
  • Information Technology (IT)
  • Help for parents with reading, writing and maths -to help parents help their children.
  • A multi-agency approach is also promoted allowing families to access information about the variety of services available to them from Education, Health, Social Services, Housing etc
